Tech Savvy Elders 2018 was delivered in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, Family and Community Services, and MGoals.
This year, the Tech Savvy Elders Program launched at Redfern Community Centre, with a further nine events held over 2018. In attendance to launch the event was The Hon. Tanya Davies, Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Women, and Minister for Ageing. The Tech Savvy Elders program was initially developed in 2013 by Telstra in partnership with the NSW Government.
The Tech Savvy Elders Program saw the MGoals team working with local schools and school students to support Elders to learn about technology, including the internet and tablet devices.
Events are held in local community centres and school locations, at which Elders learn alongside students. The program employs an intergenerational approach in which students support Elders with their learning through demonstrating, explaining and coaching them in using a digital device. Students then interview Elders about their stories and record the interviews using tablet devices.
The Tech Savvy Elders program provides Aboriginal seniors with a chance to share their knowledge and insights with young people and the broader community. In so doing, the program allows us to appreciate and acknowledge the wealth of wisdom and breadth of life experience that seniors have to share.
Importantly, Elders and their communities retain the ownership of their stories as they are edited and uploaded to their MGoals Community site for future generations to share in and learn from.

We attended the Whyalla Community event where we had a great day connecting with schools in the local community, where people had gathered to learn about technology in the past, present and future.
